When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son. “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses.”
Today’s passage records some of King David’s last words. This charge was spoken to his son, Solomon, who would follow David as Israel’s leader. Absent is the poetry that is found in many of David’s psalms. His message to Solomon is straightforward and to the point. These are words every leader needs to hear.
Be strong. I am sick of leaders acquiescing at the sign of any opposition. Leaders have to stand for what they believe regardless of the cost.
Act like a man. The feminization of men is seen throughout our culture. It is time for men to provide the leadership that God calls us to. David did not call Solomon to act like a “caveman” but as a godly man.
Observe what the Lord your God requires. A godly person is one who submits to the Lord and His requirements. Are you determined to “walk in obedience” following God’s commands?
I don’t know what will need to change in your life to apply this instruction, but I am asking you to pray for the courage to make any changes necessary. Generations will be impacted by your commitment to be strong, act like a man (if applicable) and walk in obedience.
Father, help us be those who are morally strong, who provide godly leadership and who follow hard after You in obedience. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
