Wonderful Counselor

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The prophet Isaiah told us that the Messiah was coming 700 years before his birth. In one amazing declaration about Jesus, Isaiah described the coming Messiah with four names that explain his character. The first name is Wonderful Counselor.

The Hebrew word for “wonderful” is pele. It means “extraordinary,” “beyond understanding,” “miraculous.” The Hebrew word for “counselor” is ya’as. It means to “advise,” “exhort,” or “admonish.” Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor, the extraordinary adviser. He is wonderful in his person — there is no one like him. He is wonderful in his work — he did what no one else could do. Jesus came to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). He is wonderful!

There is no counselor like Jesus. In him are hidden “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). He is omniscient — he knows everything there is to know about everything there is to know. He knows the thoughts and intentions of every heart. He explains to us that our root problem is sin. Then he provides the remedy. When we trust in Christ, he sends another counselor who takes up residence in us! The Holy Spirit guides, comforts, convicts, challenges, directs and reminds us that we belong to Jesus. You can’t pay for that kind of counseling. In fact…it’s all free!

Wonderful Counselor,

Thank you for your constant presence in guiding and directing my path. Thank you for showing me the condition of my heart and providing the eternal remedy.

In your name I pray. Amen.

Dear Ron, how wonderful our Counselor is! I was listening to Klove yesterday and they were discussing how many people are seeing counselors due to Covid seclusion. The devotion this morning gave me peace to know that at any time my counselor is right in my heart. He’s not a phone call away or as close as my next appointment. He’s not part of a blog or an online resource. He, my counselor, part of me, in me, ready throughout the day to guide, direct, and counsel me on anything that is on my mind. Nothing is too hard for him. He is MY Wonderful Counselor, my God, my savior who makes all things good. Amen, Amen!!!
