Wholehearted

It’s been said that youth is wasted on the young. But that statement does not hold true for King Josiah. He was only eight years old when he became the ruler! During his thirty-one years on the throne, the Book of the Law was rediscovered and the covenant to follow God was renewed. Scripture says of Josiah:

2 Kings 23:25

Before him there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses, nor did any like him arise after him.

Josiah did the hard work of weeding out many pagan practices. But notice in today’s passage that a leader’s success starts on the inside. Josiah followed God with all his heart (his thinking, desire, will), with all his soul (his whole being), and with all his strength (his actions). The king submitted himself to God’s commands and instructions.

Long before people see your actions, God sees your heart. Here’s the question: When he looks inside, does he like what he sees?

Talking Points

  • Ask God to help you follow him with your whole heart, soul, and strength.
  • Pray that God will allow you to live out what wholehearted obedience looks like to your children and grandchildren.

Father, help me turn to you like Josiah and follow you with all my heart, soul, and strength. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
