When You Doubt

Numbers 11:23

And the LORD said to Moses, “Is the LORD’s hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not.”

Do you ever doubt God? Doubt that he can deliver on his promises? Moses did. When Israel grew tired of God’s gracious provision of manna, they complained—again.  So, God promised them meat. But Moses doubted God’s ability to supply meat for two million people. Moses asked sarcastically, “Would they have enough if all the fish of the sea were caught for them?” God responded, “Is the LORD’s hand shortened?” God assured the doubting leader that the Lord’s arm could reach from heaven to earth and accomplish whatever needed to be done.

Doubting God is a disease that infects the human heart. God provided Jesus as the sacrifice for our sin; we slip into self-sufficiency. God provides complete forgiveness; we choose to carry our sin. God promises never to leave us; we feel alone. God promises to give us what we need; we are not all that convinced he’ll come through. God promises the Spirit’s power; we live in our human weakness. But when we doubt, God counters with the rhetorical question, “Is the LORD’s hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not.”

Talking Points

  • Unload your doubts before God. What is something you have been requesting for a long time? What obstacles stand in your path that you see no way around? Let God know your doubts and ask him to replace that doubt with trust.
  • Thank God for his promise to give you everything you need. Thank him for his power and ability to reach from heaven to interact in your situation.

And…keep trading in your doubts for trust all day long.
