When God Says, “No!”

Deuteronomy 3:23-25

And I pleaded with the LORD at that time, saying, ‘O LORD God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? Please let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’ But the LORD was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the LORD said to me, “Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.”

God always answers our prayers. We rejoice when the answer is, “Yes.” We remain hopeful when the answer is, “Wait.” But how do we handle the answer, “No!” That’s what we learn in this prayer of Moses.

An act of disobedience had disqualified Moses from leading Israel into the promised land. The man who had led Israel for forty years in their desert wanderings would not be leading them across the finish line. So, Moses pleaded with God. He sincerely praised God for his greatness, his strength, and his mighty acts. Moses then asked God to let him go into the promised land. But the Lord said to Moses, “Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.” God always answers our prayers. And sometimes the answer is, “No.”

Talking Points

  • Ask God to help you humbly accept his answer to your prayer when the answer is “No.” Ask God to help you graciously submit to his plan and his timing.
  • Teach this truth to your children and grandchildren. In teaching it, ask God to prepare them for a time when they will hear, “No” and accept God’s loving decision.

Lord, I admit it. I always want the answer to my requests to be “Yes.” I always want you to give me what I want when I want it. Forgive me for my selfishness. Help me to accept your plan and even the consequences to my sin—even my forgiven sin. Give me a heart that submits to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
