What’s the Cost?

1 Chronicles 21:24

But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the LORD what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

Have you ever done something you regretted? Yes? Then you have something in common with King David.

In response to David’s disobedience, God told him to build an altar “on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite” and make a sacrifice for his regrettable sin. David asked Araunah for the piece of land and said, “Sell it to me at the full price.” But Araunah told David to take the land and do whatever he wanted. “No,” David replied, “I insist on paying the full price. I will not . . . sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

The Christian life is a blessed life. We are forgiven. Made righteous. Reconciled to God. Indwelt by the Holy Spirit. God has given us everything that we need to do everything He has called us to do. Along with the blessings come the costs. Here’s the question. What is it costing you to serve Jesus? I mean, really? What sacrifices are you making for the One who gave it all for you?

Father, we love Your blessings. Help us to accept the costs. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
