Watch!

Mark 13:32-37

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

“When will Christ return?” “Don’t you think Jesus will come back soon?” These are questions that many Christians ask. Certainly, there are events that point to the end times. However, Jesus said about His return, “No one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” So, instead of surmising about the end times, Jesus gave three things we should do regardless if His coming is today, tomorrow, or a thousand years from now.

  • Be on guard! Satan roams around like a roaring lion looking for someone to overwhelm and destroy. Make sure you are on your guard and that another believer has your back.
  • Be alert! Vigilance demands that we are living by these five essentials: reading and studying the Word, worshiping the Lord with our lives, connected in healthy Christian relationships, serving God and others, and sharing the message of Jesus.
  • Watch! Living with the expectation of Christ’s return means that we keep our eyes on eternal things. We live holding the things of earth loosely. We can take nothing temporal with us, but we can send spiritual things on ahead.

Father, help me be on my guard, be alert, and be watchful until I meet Jesus face to face. In His name.  Amen.
