Numbers 32:11-12

Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more when they came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob–not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.

After God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt, Moses sent twelve spies to scope out the Promised Land. All agreed that the land was “flowing with milk and honey,” but ten of the undercover agents were convinced that the land was also filled with a large number of strong men who could not be defeated. Only two were ready to take the land. As a result, the doubters died in the desert. Only Caleb and Joshua were allowed to enter the land of promise.

Notice how God describes these two men: “they followed me wholeheartedly.” What does it mean to follow God wholeheartedly?

  • Focus. The majority of the spies focused on the strength of the enemy. The result? Fear. Joshua and Caleb focused on the strength of their God. The result? Faith.
  • Direction. Fear always causes retreat. Faith always leads the charge.
  • Trust. At some point we have to determine who or what we really trust. Will it be our abilities, training, position, portfolio or the living God? The answer is simple on paper, but the application is hard in practice.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better description of a life well-lived—“He/She followed God wholeheartedly.” Do you want that on your headstone? Then you have to start living the inscription today.

Father, it is so easy for me to lose my focus, take the wrong direction, and trust the worthless things of this world. Please help me follow you wholeheartedly and enjoy the fruits of your promises today and forever. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
