Mark 15:33-34

At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

There are many things that are hard for the human mind to grasp. The eternality of God is one. There has never been a time when God has not existed, and there will never be a time when He will not exist. The Trinity is another. One God in three persons. The cry of Jesus found in today’s passage is yet another.

God the Father sent God the Son to pay the penalty for our sins. God is holy, and His wrath for sin was poured out on Jesus, who bore our sins in His body on the cross. The wrath of God and the weight of sin caused Jesus to cry out in a loud voice, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?” While the physical pain was agonizing, the pain of God the Father turning His back on God the Son was almost more than Jesus could bear. Some commentators believe that Jesus was saying, “I don’t know how much longer I can endure this.”

Jesus’ question to the Father was a deep cry of His unfathomable love for us.  Even when He felt forsaken by the Father, even when He didn’t know how much longer He could hold on, even when the pain was unimaginable, Jesus never gave up. He never gave in. Jesus paid for sin in its deepest and fullest penalty for you and me.

Lord Jesus, words cannot even begin to express my gratitude. I thank You for Your love with all my heart. In Your name. Amen.
