Twelve Inches Down

Psalm 119:9-10
ב Beth

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.

As I write this, four fallen pastors come to mind. Their straying rippled through local congregations and made headline news. Each situation is a hard reminder that reading the Bible, studying the Bible, preaching sermons about the Bible, and writing books on the Bible is not enough. Head knowledge must be transformed into action.

The question in today’s passage is an important one. How can a person, young or old, stay on the path of purity? The answer: Do what God’s Word says to do. That’s pretty straightforward. But many men and women have taken a dangerous detour when they neglected to move the knowledge in their head twelve inches down to their heart.

Staying on the path begins with a promise and a plea. We must be committed to seek God with all our heart. We plead for God’s strength so we will never stray from His perfect instruction.

Father, never allow me to think that just doing another Bible study makes me a spiritual person. Keep driving the truth from my head to my heart. Never let me get comfortable with more knowledge without meaningful application. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
