2 Kings 1:3

But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’”

Israel’s king, Ahaziah, took a fall. While walking in his upper room, he fell through the lattice covering a window. More than likely, he fell to the ground because his injuries were serious. Instead of praying to God for healing, he sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, god of Ekron.

God sent the prophet Elijah to intercept the messengers and ask them, “Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult [a pagan god]?” What in the world was King Ahaziah thinking? By ignoring God, the king’s actions resulted in his death.

I find Elijah’s question a bit convicting. We depend on many things other than God to bring healing and success into our lives. We depend on many things other than God to provide security and confidence. Is it because we can’t or won’t trust God that we place our trust in all this other stuff? I believe there is a big lesson to learn from Israel’s king, Ahaziah.

Father, forgive us for trusting in other “gods” to find what we are looking for. Remind us of the absolute futility of trusting in anything but You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
