I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
Jesus is the vine; we are the branches. J. C. Ryle notes that this union “is the whole secret of the branch’s life, strength, vigour, beauty, and fertility. Separate from the parent stem, it has no life of its own.”
I see this truth vividly illustrated in my front yard as I write. A recent windstorm blew many branches from their source of life and onto the ground. I will soon build a fire and burn the fallen branches. They have no life on their own.
The union between Jesus and those who follow him is just as real as the vine and the branch. All we have—life, strength, our relationship with God, everything we need—comes from our Savior. Indeed, Jesus is our source of life.
Lord Jesus, thank you for making us who we are, providing us with what we need, and growing us into who you want us to be. In your name, I pray. Amen.
