Nehemiah 8:5-6

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

The people of Israel had gone through a spiritual drought. They lived with broken-down walls and broken hearts. Fear and defeat characterized their existence. Then God changed everything. The great God sent Nehemiah to lead the wall rebuilding project and Ezra to begin the heart rebuilding project when he opened the Book of the Law and started reading.

The people responded with deep emotion. They shouted, “Amen, Amen,” showing their agreement with the Word. They lifted up their hands as a posture of worship and bowed their heads to express their humility and adoration. The reading of God’s Word inspired their prayer. As one writer says, “The Scriptures add fuel to the fire of the heart’s devotion.”

Talking Points

  • Ask God to give you a desire to read his Word and the commitment to read it every day.
  • Ask God to give you the emotion to respond with appropriate worship to what you read. Ask God to keep you from stretches of spiritual drought.

Father, thank you for your Word. Help me read and respond with the emotion of a heart devoted to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
