The Life-Giving Spirit

John 6:63

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

The Holy Spirit gives life to the spiritually dead. The best deeds of the flesh cannot revive the lifeless soul. The natural man’s heart monitor shows a flat line until resuscitated by the living God. When the Spirit comes, spiritual life transforms the whole person.

Jesus spoke these words in today’s passage to people caught in religious rituals. They had moved from meaningful liturgy to legalism. They morphed what God had intended to be a reminder of his grace into a system of self-service and self-sufficiency. Jesus reminded them that the deeds of the flesh count for nothing.

How about you? Are you still trying to work your way to God? Still trying to be good enough for him? Our only hope depends on what Jesus did for us. When we accept the finished work of Christ, the Spirit pumps life into our shriveled hearts.

Father, use your Word today to remind the person caught in a system of works that their actions are futile. It counts for nothing. Lead them to the cross and pour your Spirit on their heart. Cause them to trust in Jesus and let them know your eternal peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
