The Jesus I Want

Luke 9:43b-45

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

The disciples were confused. They had just witnessed the feeding of 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two small fish. Three of them had been on the mountain with Jesus where “his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.” After coming down from the mountain, Jesus healed a boy who had been possessed by a demon. “While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did,” He told the disciples that He was going to suffer and die.

The suffering thing was more than the disciples could handle. They could not comprehend that Jesus was “going to be delivered into the hands of men,” and then suffer and die. Even when Jesus introduced the topic with “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you,” they still didn’t get it.

Too many still don’t get it. They like to have the miracle worker and the feeding-of-the-5,000 kind of Jesus. They desire a Jesus that drives out demons. But the cross and our response to it gets in the way of what we want “our Jesus” to be. How about you? What do you want your Jesus to be?

Father, help me be one who understands Jesus as He is presented in Your Word: the suffering servant who died on the cross for my sin. Help me respond to His sacrifice with sacrificial service. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
