The Heart Melter

Psalm 147:15-20
He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast? He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow. He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel. He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the LORD.

It is an absolute fact of spiritual growth: You cannot grow unless you are regularly reading God’s Word. His Word is a lamp to our feet and light to our path. It points us to the right path, tells us when we stray, shows us how to get back on the path, and challenges us to stay on the path of obedience. God’s Word judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

In the day this psalm was written fast runners carried messages. The psalmist likens God’s Word to one of those message carriers. God’s Word “runs swiftly.” The Lord personally delivers it to those who follow Him, just in time. When we receive the message it “melts” us and stirs our passions. God’s Word produces action in our lives.

Now is the time to make commitments for a new year. My challenge to you is to commit to reading God’s Word every day. Scripture is our spiritual food. It nourishes our hearts and quenches our thirst. God desires to melt your heart, stir your passions, and encourage you for action. This coming year make it your resolution to read God’s Word.

Father, thank You for Your Word that melts, challenges, and encourages my heart. Help me make the commitment to read Your Word each day. Give me the encouragement to follow through with that commitment. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
