The Great Hope

Romans 8:18-19

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.  For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

In the spring of his sophomore year in college, our son ended up with a fractured jaw. A line drive to the side of the face in an intramural softball game did the damage, cracking a few teeth in the process. The possible options were to do nothing and risk the bones splintering, plates to put the bones together, or wire his jaw shut. Collectively, with the doctors, we decided on option three. A few weeks on a liquid diet was much better than splintered bones and later surgery to put plates in. The discomfort in the short term would pay off in the future.

The pain we endure in life hurts. Sometimes our journey takes us through times of devastation and discouragement. The loss of a job, illness, relationship breakups, an unrealized dream, and death are just some of the adversities that can bring about “sufferings of this present time.” But for the Christian, this one thing is sure—whatever we are going through today will be eclipsed by the future glory that awaits the children of God. The present pain will not compare to the future glory.

So be encouraged! I know that today is tough for many of you reading this. I cannot even imagine the hurt some of you are experiencing, and words cannot bring comfort. But while we pray, be encouraged. One day Jesus will wipe away every tear and welcome you to the home where pain, suffering, crying, and tears cannot enter. Your darkest night will one day be erased by the view of the Son.

Father, I pray for those going through pain and suffering. I pray that by your Spirit, you would bring comfort and peace into their lives. May they look to you and find all the strength and encouragement they need for today, knowing of the future glory promised. In Christ’s name. Amen.
