The Good Shepherd

John 10:11-12

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.

A person values what is his, what he has worked and sacrificed for. The owner of a business has a deep appreciation for his company. He is willing to work long hours and make sacrifices that his employees may not be willing to make. Jesus used this same principle to demonstrate the depth of his care and love for us.

The hired hand, Jesus said, is just that—a hired hand. So when trouble comes, he quickly abandons the sheep to save himself. As a result, the sheep are left vulnerable to the enemy’s attack. But this does not happen with the Good Shepherd.

The Good Shepherd knows, loves, and cares for his sheep. When the enemy comes, he stays to protect them and is willing – if need be – to die for them. And that is exactly what Jesus did. There was nothing that could save us from death and hell except his sacrifice. So he willingly gave his life on the cross as a sacrifice for our sin. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for us. How will you respond today to such love?

Lord Jesus, thank you for being the Good Shepherd. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Lord, by your Spirit, help me demonstrate my gratitude for such great love today. In your name, I pray. Amen.
