The Disease of Doubt

Numbers 11:23

The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.”

God’s gracious provision of manna was getting old for some of the Israelites. “If only we had meat to eat!” they complained. “We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost, but now we never see anything but this manna!” How easy it is to take God’s gracious provisions for granted.

God promised a month’s worth of meat for Israel, but Moses doubted God’s ability to supply that much meat for two million Israelites. Moses asked sarcastically, “Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?” God responded to Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short?”

Doubting God is a disease that continues to infect the human heart. God provides sin’s sacrifice; we proclaim self-sufficiency. God provides forgiveness; we carry our sin. God promises never to leave us; we feel alone. God promises to give us what we need; we’re not convinced he’ll come through. God promises the Spirit’s power; we live in our human weakness. To all who question his ability to deliver, he answers, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.”

Father, forgive my doubts. I acknowledge that you are more than able to reach down and meet my needs. Thank you for your patience with me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
