Romans 13:14

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

In today’s passage, Paul uses an interesting word picture. He instructs believers to “clothe” ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. What does that mean? What does this apparel of Jesus look like?

I believe the clothing of Jesus is woven together with three brilliant threads.

THE THREAD OF ACCEPTANCE: As a believer, I have been forgiven and declared “not guilty” (Romans 5:1-2).  I am a child of the living God (John 1:12). I can even call God, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15).

THE THREAD OF SECURITY: Because of Jesus, I am free from any condemnation (Romans 8:1). Because of Jesus’ work for me on the cross there is nothing in all creation that can separate me from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). I live with the confidence of knowing that “God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29).

THE THREAD OF SIGNIFICANCE: I am blessed to be God’s work of art (Ephesians 2:10). I can always approach God’s throne of grace with confidence. There I will “receive mercy and find grace to help [me] in [my] time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

The clothing of Christ is woven with the unchanging strands of acceptance, security, and significance. When you are clothed with Christ, you are never out of style.

Father, thank You for forgiving me and making me Your child. Thank You for giving me security through eternity. Thank You for giving me true significance. Help me to wear the clothing of Jesus well. May others see the beauty of Christ in me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
