Revelation 3:14

“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.’”

When we think of Jesus, our minds retrieve a mental picture from our past experiences. Maybe our image is from a picture that hung on a wall, something we saw as a child in Sunday school, or from what we have imagined after reading a story in the New Testament. Maybe your depiction has Jesus calling the little children to himself, healing a blind man, walking on water, or teaching to a large group on a mountainside.

The title we find in Revelation 3 shakes us from many of those perceptions. Jesus is the beginning of God’s creation. This is beautifully explained to us in Colossians 1:16-18:

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. (NIV)

Jesus is the Creator and ruler over God’s creation. In Jesus, all things hold together. He is supreme over everything. That’s the truth of Jesus we want to understand and the picture we want to be engraved on our hearts.

Lord Jesus,

We acknowledge you as supreme over all.
