The Appearance Trap

1 Samuel 9:2

Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.

When it came time for Israel to choose their first king, what kind of criteria do you think they used? What were they looking for in the man who would lead them? Honesty? Integrity? Leadership? Not quite. Israel got caught in the trap of appearance.

But then again, the appearance trap is still snapping shut on many victims today. More than a few young men and women have fallen in love with a face or a body before they ever saw the person’s heart. Presidential elections have become more about camera presence than political substance.

Here’s the problem—Saul was nice to look at but a disaster to follow. So the lesson is a simple one: Don’t choose a king by his cover (or a wife, husband, friend, president for that matter). Beautiful bodies lose their lure when they house a shriveled heart.

Father, help us be discerning enough to not be caught in the appearance trap…and live to regret it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
