Psalm 51:13-19

Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Psalm 51 is David’s prayer for forgiveness after he had committed adultery. In this prayer, there are several important truths regarding true repentance that we’ve considered over the last two days. Here is the final principle.

  1. Repentance is more than lip service.

There are two types of repentance. One is called “attrition.” This describes guilt caused by fear of punishment. The Bible calls this “worldly sorrow.” This common form of repentance says, “I’m sorry I got caught.” Attrition is lip service regret.

A second type of repentance called “contrition” involves deep remorse for having offended the holy God. It is a full admission without cover-up. It does not blame others or rationalize sin. Contrition is a true confession. As David says, “…a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

Talking to God

Father, don’t let me rationalize my sin and blame it on others. Don’t let me only be sorry for getting caught. Help me own my guilt and bring it to you with a broken and contrite heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
