Standing Firm in Unshakable Faith: Hiding from God

Let’s be honest. Have you ever felt like running from God? I have. There have been times when I wanted to be alone, wanted to hide, and wanted some distance from God. But where is that place of seclusion? Let’s see what King David said.

Psalm 139:7-10
Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.

In our passage today, David asks the question: Where in the world can I go to hide from God? David concluded that there was only one answer, “Nowhere!”

If we could ascend into the heavens—the highest place—God would be there. If we could make our way to Sheol—the lowest place—God would be waiting. Even if we could fly and escape like a bird to the remotest part of the sea, God would be there, and he would not be in a passive mood. Wherever we go, God is present to lead us and hold us steady…even when our worlds are crumbling.

So, wherever you are today, God is with you. Discouraged, depressed, devastated by life’s events? God is with you. Broken body, broken heart, broken spirit? God is with you. Moving too fast, moving too slow, on hold? God matches your pace. At a crossroads, wondering which way to go? Let his hand guide you. Living with fear, dread, and anxiety? Let his hand of peace hold you fast. Even if you want to run from God, there is no use trying. You will always run right into his presence.

Father, comfort us with the truth of your constant presence. Thank you for the promise that you will never leave us or forsake us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
