Stand Accountable

Numbers 32:23

But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.

Our sins are pesky little things, aren’t they? We fondle them in secret, and then when we least expect it, they show up decorated in bright flashing lights. We meet them in private; they return in public. We engage them in the dark; they emerge in the light.

The apostle Paul reminded Timothy, “The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them” (1 Timothy 5:24). Whether our sin is waiting for us with its sinister greeting, or tracks us down like a heat- seeking missile, you can be sure that “your sin will find you out.”

Maybe you are different. Maybe this passage doesn’t apply to you. Maybe you believe you are one of those people who can wallow in a pile of manure and come out smelling like a rose. And maybe you will be able to go to your grave with a great secret sin. But remember there is life after the grave. God says that nothing in all creation is hidden in his sight. “Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account” (Hebrews 4:13). You may pull the wool over the eyes of men, but nothing is hidden from God.

Father, please don’t allow me to think that my secret sin will not eventually show up in public or that what I do in darkness is somehow hidden from you. Remind me often that one day I will stand accountable before you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
