My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.
Some people collect knowledge like others collect coins. They are addicted to new tidbits of information. They are seminar junkies. They cannot turn down a new study bible or Bible study. But like too much food and too little exercise do damage to the waistline, too much knowledge never put into practice does damage to the soul.
In today’s passage, God told Ezekiel that the people loved to hear him teach. He likened Ezekiel’s messages to “one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well.” But after listening to the message, although “their mouths speak of love . . . their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.” They hear the words but don’t put them into practice.
How about you? Are you eating too much and exercising too little? Do you appreciate the “love songs,” beautiful voices, and well-played instruments of a worship service but neglect practicing the message of the songs? Do you enjoy a good sermon like a good steak but never use the spiritual food for spiritual exercise? Do you speak love with your mouth but continue greed in your heart? Convicting, isn’t it? Today is the day to put knowledge into practice.
Father, convict me if I am all head and no heart. Point out where I am enjoying the love songs but not sharing the love. Forgive me for speaking truth with my mouth but not living out the truth I proclaim. Show me where my words and actions don’t match up. Give me the desire and courage to change. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
