“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”
When Jesus was on the earth, the disciples did not always understand who he was, what he taught them, and why he came to earth. Three things had to happen before they fully understood. First, he had to die. Secondly, he had to rise again. And finally, the Spirit had to come to help the disciples understand Jesus’ words and actions.
Jesus assured the disciples that the “Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit would help the disciples recall all of Jesus’ teaching and help them understand it. What an amazing ministry of the Spirit!
In 1 Corinthians, Paul explains that the Spirit of God has a similar ministry for all believers. The Spirit reveals to us the depth of God’s love and his plans for us through his Word. Paul writes, “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God” (1 Corinthians 2:11-12). The Spirit of truth reveals to the believer the truths of God’s Word.
Thank you for sending the Spirit of truth to help me understand the depth of your love and the plans you have for me as they are revealed in your Word. Keep my heart open to your Spirit.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
