Psalm 62:1-7

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

In a world filled with distractions, I find rest for my worn-out soul in God alone. My spiritual fatigue comes when I am plugged into the wrong outlets. God is the only power source for true strength.

The first part of today’s passage literally reads, “For God alone my soul waits in silence.” Only to God did David hold fast with complete calmness. He knew that God was his “rock” (source of safety) and “salvation” (deliverance). David said that God was his “fortress” and like a soldier sitting inside the impenetrable walls of a great stronghold, David rested in the Lord.

How about you? Are you wearied from being plugged in…to the wrong sources? Are the distracting calls of life turning your attention from the only One who can bring calmness to your frenetic heart? I challenge you to an experiment. For one day unplug from social media, television, and as many emails, texts, phone calls, as your livelihood will allow. Start the day by reading God’s Word, spending time in prayer, and continuing to communicate with him throughout the day. Take a walk or spend time at a park enjoying God’s beautiful creation. God can deliver rest to your soul. Maybe you’ve been too busy to let him.

Talking to God

Father, forgive me for plugging my life into things that drag me down. Help me find my continued strength in you alone. In the midst of my responsibilities, remind me often that true rest is found only in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
