Matthew 27:32-33

As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).

The vertical beam of the cross waited at Golgotha. The horizontal beam was laid on the Lord’s neck. His arms were stretched out; His hands were tied to the ends of the beam. Jesus began His journey to the cross.

Jesus was paraded through the narrow streets like a common criminal. The spectacle of a man carrying his cross took place as a statement of the criminal’s submission to Rome. However, Jesus carried His cross in submission to the Father. This was the Father’s will. He loved us so much that He gave His Son to die on our behalf.

Exhausted by the beatings and floggings of the day, Jesus collapsed under the load. A man from Cyrene was forced to carry the cross for Jesus. Little did Simon of Cyrene know that the cross was actually for his sins…and yours and mine. Simon carried the cross to Golgotha, then laid it down for the Savior to become our sacrifice.

Lord Jesus, thank You for taking the cross from Simon of Cyrene and dying in his place and mine. Thank You for Your ultimate sacrifice that provides forgiveness and eternal life. In Your name. Amen.
