Signs or the Savior

Matthew 16:1-4

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

The religious leaders wanted Jesus to perform just one more really big sign. Another sign from heaven. A sign more spectacular than healings. Another proof of His claim to be God in the flesh. Another miracle to demonstrate His power. Just one more sign.

In response to their request, Jesus used an illustration from meteorology. He told them that they were good at predicting the weather based on the signs in the sky. However, spiritual signs indicating who Jesus was surrounded them, and they missed them all.

Many people are always looking for one more sign before they trust in Jesus. They need another truth, another proof, another convincing book, another demonstration that Jesus is worthy to be trusted. And yet all the signs they need are right before their eyes. It’s time to stop looking for more signs and focus on the Savior.

Father, I pray for those looking for another sign. Please open their eyes to Jesus. In His name. Amen.
