Deuteronomy 6:6-9

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

The job of parenting is simple: We are to live in love with Jesus and teach our children how to do the same. Simple, yet hard, and of eternal importance.

God’s Word is to be the controller of our hearts—the control room of our lives. We can’t impart what we don’t possess. It all starts with our walk with Jesus. Then our assignment is to teach all aspects of following hard after Jesus to our children. This teaching is to be diligent—intentional, strategic, and strong. Far from a spiritually compartmentalized life, Christian parents saturate every aspect of their lives and home life with the reality of his presence. When they are sitting, walking, lying down, and getting up, the love of Jesus is to be expressed and demonstrated.

Talking Points

  • Ask God to help you fall in love with his Word—reading and obeying it every day. Ask him to help you impress his Word on your heart.
  • Ask God to give you all you need to teach (show and tell) about his love to your children and grandchildren. Pray that he gives you clear opportunities throughout the day to talk about spiritual truths.

O Lord, time with our children (and grandchildren) is precious. Help us demonstrate the great joy of following hard after you. May our words drive our actions, and our actions support our words. Help us to understand that time goes fast. May we be diligent to teach our children well. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
