Set Free

John 8:31-32

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Becoming a follower of Jesus is all about grace. Our relationship with God is not deserved, nor can it be earned. Our best effort on our best day falls short. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. And…this inner working of salvation is demonstrated by the outer workings of our lives.

Holding to the teachings of Jesus is obedience. We hear what he says, and we do it. The believer’s obedience is not perfect. We will stumble and fall on the journey. But, over the long haul, there will be a pattern of obedience demonstrating God’s work in our lives through the Holy Spirit. It is our acceptance and obedience to God’s Word that results in freedom from sin’s rule over us.

The world defines freedom as doing anything we want to do whenever we want to do it. But unfortunately, that philosophy will lead to a loss of liberty. True freedom comes by adhering to God’s truth. When we “know (and obey) the truth,” we will find the freedom in Christ we have been looking for.

Lord Jesus, I pray for the person reading this today who feels that following you would somehow deprive them of their freedom. Remind them that such thinking has always been Satan’s lie. Show them today that true freedom is found only in you. In your name, I pray. Amen.

I learned the best definition of, “Freedom”, when I was in the Marines, over on the Island of Okinawa Japan.
I was attending a Bible conference, where the guest speaker was a elderly lady named Hansie. She had grown up as one of Hitler’s youth.
Her definition is, Freedom = choosing to do what is right, in GOD’S eyes.
