Mark 6:20

Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.

Many enjoy Christianity in the same way one enjoys a Rubik’s Cube. It is enjoyable and challenging, frustrating and promising. Aligning the colors on the cube is possible within an experience that seems impossible. King Herod enjoyed his version of Rubik’s Cube Christianity. He liked to listen to John and yet was greatly puzzled.

Today many are like King Herod. They appreciate the mental stimulation of talking about the mysterious things of God. They can go on for hours debating doctrinal themes. They love to respond to arguments and points with counterarguments and counterpoints. Their Rubik’s Cube Christianity results in much interchange, but no heart change.

Do you know a person into Rubik’s Cube Christianity? You have to prayerfully consider if the person is truly searching (that is, if God is at work in that person’s heart), or if the person is like King Herod—merely enjoying the mental challenge and mystery of a puzzle. If the person is searching, ask God to give you the right words at the right time. If the person is playing games, let them play by themselves.

Father, I need Your wisdom and discernment in dealing with the people You’ve put in my life. Help me know when I am being a good steward of my time and when I should be using it for other worthwhile investments. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
