Road Rules: Written on Your Heart

Proverbs 3:3-4

Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success
in the sight of God and man.

Marriage is challenging! No two ways about it. Even the best relationship has rough patches. Communication breakdowns (or shutdowns), isolation, loneliness, and hurt all take place in real life. But there are two trump cards in today’s proverb—love and faithfulness.

“Love” translates from the Hebrew word chesed and means “kindness and goodness.” Love prompts calmness within anger; reasoned, instead of reckless words; expressions of care not in response to what another person has done but…just because. “Faithfulness” translates from the Hebrew word emeth and means “firmness.” Emeth stands steady when others retreat, remains loyal in challenging circumstances, and stays in the relationship when you are tempted to bail.

Want to win favor with God? Want to enrich your marriage? Develop a heart of love and faithfulness, then let it flow through your life. At the end of the day, you will be welcomed home by God, and your children will have a godly legacy to follow.

Father, help us live and finish strong. May your Spirit produce godly love and faithfulness in our lives. May others see your work in our hearts.

In Christ’s name.

Amen.
