Proverbs 3:17
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

Our proverb today is found in a section where Solomon describes wisdom as a woman. She is “more profitable than silver” and “more precious than rubies.” Investment in wisdom “yields better returns than gold.” In her right hand, she holds “a long life,” and in her left hand “are riches and honor” (Proverbs 3:13-16 NIV).

Wisdom is not intellectualism. Many smart people do not accept God. Wisdom is not the acquisition of facts. Learning too often stays in one’s head. But wisdom takes us to a deeper place—our hearts. Wisdom is living in awe of God and honoring him with obedience. 

Wisdom does not guarantee a problem-free life or make us immune to the fallout of bad decisions. But wisdom will lead us to a life God blesses. And God will bring peace to our paths—a peace that surpasses human understanding (Philippians 4:7). 

Father, place within our hearts a desire to follow hard after you. Keep us on the path where your blessings rain down upon us. Keep us on the path where your peace fills our hearts. O God, protect us from being found in the story of a life that leads to destruction. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
