Road Rules: Trust

by | Aug 17, 2022 | Daily Devotion, Road Rules | 0 comments

King David wrote, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses….” It’s easy to trust things that give us a sense of power and security, isn’t it? We allow careers to give us confidence. We allow retirement plans to reassure us. We allow investments to make us feel good about the future. We allow where we live or what we drive to make us feel significant. We allow our “chariots” and “horses” to make us feel safe and protected. For the believer, though, things are different. David adds to his statement, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7). Today’s proverb echoes David’s words.

Proverbs 16:20
Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

Prosperity does not come from material things but from the spiritual discipline of following God’s instruction. Blessing does not come from anything the world can offer but from a deep trust in the sovereign Lord.

Back in 1922, Rhea F. Miller wrote a song that has stood the test of time. Read the words and ask yourself this question: Would I rather have Jesus? Or would I rather have the world’s stuff?

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand.

Than to be the king of a vast domain,
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

Father, examine our hearts and help us to answer that question honestly. If we say we’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords, show us if we truly demonstrate that desire with our lives.

In Christ’s name.

Amen.
