Road Rules: Refreshment to Your Bones

Proverbs 3:7-8

Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

There was a television show in the 1950s called Father Knows Best starring Robert Young, Jane Wyatt, and their children, “Princess,” “Bud,” and “Kitten.”  Okay, I had to google that information. I only remembered the name of the program. In this show, as promised in the title, the father always had the right advice at the right time. Let’s be honest, forget Robert Young, most of us could produce our own series—titled I Know Best.

We really think we do know best, don’t we? I’ll speak for myself. I evaluate events based on my experience. I assess the atmosphere based on my perspective. I judge decisions on how they will impact me. My personal appraisal of life leads me to believe that I possess wisdom and that everybody else should get in line behind me. Now that’s a problem, isn’t it?

To live a life that is spiritually healthy, our heavenly Father must always be at the head of the line. We must jettison our own wants and desires and live in obedience to him. True wisdom begins when we embrace both God and his instruction. Only our heavenly Father always knows best.

Father, keep us looking to you for true wisdom, following you for clear instruction, and obeying you for spiritual healthiness. Thank you for always knowing what is best for us.

In Jesus’ name.

Amen.
