After seminary, I taught at a public school during the week and preached at a small east Texas start-up church on the weekends. Leaving very early on Sunday mornings to arrive in time for the services, I experienced many sunrises on my drives. Each time the beautiful process moved me. The dark would turn to dawn as the sun began peeking over the horizon. Then the darkness was gradually chased away as the sun shone brighter and brighter. I think of those trips every time I read this passage.

Proverbs 4:18-19

But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.

Without God, the journey of life is “deep darkness.” But when we belong to the Father through the work of his Son, God promises to direct our paths (Prov. 3:5-6). Sometimes the paths seem dark and confusing. Fear makes it hard to start the journey. Disappointment fogs the trail. The fact is, a darkened path is not uncommon for those committed to a life of faith. Our job is to take one step of trust, then another, and another. Faith allows some light to peek over the horizon. With each step of faith, the way that was once confusing becomes clear; the path that was once dark is bright. The journey to heaven is a journey of faith…one step at a time.

Father, speak to us clearly. Help us to believe. Give us faith for one step and then another. Thank you for providing all the light we need to follow hard after you…all the way home.
