We all have a public persona, whether we admit it or not. I do. Not saying I am proud of it. Not saying it’s a good thing. Just admitting one of my many faults. There is a certain way we act on life’s stage when the lights are bright and the audience is watching. We are all performers of sorts, with roles to play and lines to recite. We rise for our time upfront. But then, behind closed doors, in the private quarters, with those we love the most, we let down behind the scenes. 

We can fool a lot of people. We can’t fool those who know us best. And we can never fool the Lord. He knows us inside and out. 

Proverbs 21:2

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart. 

We can justify our performance and be numbed to the two faces we wear. But the “eyes of the Lord are in every place” (Prov. 15:3). He does not distinguish between “on stage” or “backstage.” He puts our hearts on his scale to reveal if our pretending outweighs our commitment to him. When we turn our hearts wholly to him, the playacting is over. 

Take the next few seconds to confess any areas where you are pretending. Ask God to bring them to your mind. 

Take the next few seconds to ask God to help you live a life of integrity—a life that is the same on stage or backstage.

Ask God to search your heart—to weigh your heart—and turn your mind, emotions, and will fully towards him. 

Lord Jesus, I love you, and I know you love me. Thank you for loving me unconditionally and forgiving me when I fail. I pray in your name. Amen.
