Road Rules: He Establishes Our Plans

Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

I believe Martin Luther said: Love God and do what you will. That simplifies things, doesn’t it? If you truly love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, then the things you desire and do will be in line with his plans. Our proverb today has the same idea in mind.

Committing whatever I do to the Lord is not to be done flippantly or selfishly. First, I want to know that what I am committing to him is in line with his word. He will not bless my disobedience. Second, I want to know that what I am committing to him is within my skill set. Wouldn’t God want me to be involved in areas where he has gifted me? Third, what I commit to the Lord should involve properly using my resources. The rich fool’s decision to build bigger barns failed (Luke 12). Fourth, what I commit to the Lord must have a proper investment of time. Will God bless endeavors that demand I ignore my family?

The real question of this proverb is found in the “whatever you do.” Do your actions meet the four criteria listed above? If so, then you can give them over to God with confidence. If not, it is time to reconsider the “whatever” you are doing.

Father, keep me following so close to you that whatever I do is worthy

of committing to you.

In Jesus’ name.

Amen.
