Psalm 54
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, “Is not David hiding among us?”

Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might. Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth. Arrogant foes are attacking me; ruthless people are trying to kill me—people without regard for God. Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. Let evil recoil on those who slander me; in your faithfulness destroy them. I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you; I will praise your name, Lord, for it is good. You have delivered me from all my troubles, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.

David was on the run from Saul and found a hiding place in the Desert of Ziph. But some of the Ziphites (never trust a Ziphite!) went to Saul and reported David’s whereabouts. Saul headed to Ziph, began the chase, and had David and his men cornered…until…God intervened.

Just as Saul was closing in on David, a messenger came to Saul with an urgent report: “Come quickly! The Philistines are raiding the land.” Saul had to stop pursuing David in order to fight off the Philistines. What a surprise and relief it must have been when all of a sudden Saul and his men stopped chasing David. David learned how God had intervened and said, “Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.”

God is never late, but He is seldom early. If you are being pursued by your enemy today don’t give in! God has not forgotten you. He is on the way. He comes to our aid…right on time.

Father, thank You for this reminder that You are always working on my behalf, sometimes, many times, in ways I can’t see. Thank You for always being right on time. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
