Joel 2:25

I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten.

Regret is a painful emotion, a worse reality. There are so many past words we wish could be taken back. So many decisions we would like to undo. So many actions that brought unwanted and lasting consequences. For many people, sin has eaten away prime years of their lives. Maybe you are one of those people.

The prophet Joel described a day of punishment on God’s people. Joel saw a large locust plague and drought that would devastate the land. He described the locusts – which should be taken literally – as God’s army. The army of locusts came in massive numbers to devastate the land. They destroyed crops that not only eliminated that year’s harvest but others to follow. Many have a similar thing happen in their lives. Addictions, bad decisions, divorce, abuse, and many other sins bring a hoard of consequences that come in like locusts, devastating people in our lives. These “locusts” rob us and those we love of everything from a parent’s affection to the physical needs of food, clothing, and shelter. Sometimes we wonder if we can ever recover from the days of spiritual ruin.

Maybe you feel that your past sins have robbed you of many good years. God promises to “repay” His people “for the years the locusts have eaten.” Remember the locusts came as a result of their sin. But in God’s grace, He desires to bring restoration. The following prayer will guide you in the process of redeeming the years the “locusts” have devoured.

Father, I am sorry for my sin against You. I am sorry for the pain my sin has caused others in my life. I desire to turn from my sin and turn to You. I desire to follow hard after You from this day forward. I have wasted some precious years of my life. But please redeem the years the locusts have eaten. I wait for You to do Your work in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
