Refuge: The Lord Is My Helper

Hebrews 13:5-6
Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

The search for a life of confidence is on. Some move from relationship to relationship looking for a sense of peace in a person. Some try to find something to soothe their soul in a bottle, needle, or pill. The recipients of today’s passage must have been putting their trust in the “Almighty Dollar”—the other god. The writer tells them to steer clear of money worship and learn contentment.

The writer to the Hebrews gives us this foundational truth: Confidence comes from one source—the person of Jesus. He is always with us. He will never leave us and never leaves us alone. He is the One who comes to our aid and stands by our side. He is our protection from the people and things that attack us.

Fear comes from being alone and vulnerable. Fear wells up within us when we feel we are helpless, and life seems out of control. However, when we understand who God is and believe his promises, we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear.”

Lord Jesus, this is my profession: You are my helper; I will have no fear! Thank you for never leaving me alone. Amen.
