In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
The book of Judges describes a generation “who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10 NIV). There are a few highlights, but even the well-known characters were greatly flawed. Gideon’s life ended poorly when he made an idol that became a “snare” to him and his family. Samson lived a reckless life ending in one last demonstration of strength that killed three thousand Philistines and himself.
This was a time in Israel’s history when the people lived without godly leadership. They did what was deemed right in their own minds. That, of course, is a recipe for disaster. So, let’s pray today for God to check our hearts.
Talking Points
- Ask God to check your heart. Ask him to show you anything you are doing that you have rationalized as right.
- Ask God to give you the courage to repent and change course from your way to God’s way. Make sure to ask forgiveness from anyone you have hurt along the way.
Father, please let this book serve as a warning. Keep me from self-counsel and rationalization. Keep me from doing the things that seem right in my own eyes. Keep me in your Word, following your instructions. Keep me on the road that leads to blessing and life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
