Sometimes we remain still, trying to hide from God. Sometimes we are in a full-out sprint, trying to run from God. But regardless of how fast and far we run, we are still right there in his presence!

Psalm 139:7-12
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

God is not limited by time or space. He is omnipresent. He is present everywhere at the same time in his whole being. There is nowhere in the entire universe, on land or sea, in the heights or depths, that a person can go to get away from God.

Admittedly, there are times when this is a frustrating truth. In our rebellion, we want to escape God’s presence. We want what we think is the freedom to run wherever we want to run. But wherever we go, he is already there. Our freedom leads to disaster. And he is there, even in the messes we’ve made, to guide us back home. In the end, this truth about God is the best news ever.

God’s omnipresence means that we are never alone. He is there in our laughter and our tears. He is there when we pump our fists with excitement and when we hang our heads in despair. He stands by our side as we watch our loved ones breathe their last. He walks with us from the grave and through our grief. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. The omnipresent One is with us…through eternity.

Father, forgive us when we try to hide from you. Thank you for never leaving our side. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
