Judges 13:12

And Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, what is to be the child’s manner of life, and what is his mission?”

Manoah and his wife were going to have a baby. The angel of the Lord delivered the news. While a heavenly messenger is certainly out of the ordinary for a reveal party, Manoah’s response shouldn’t be.

The soon-to-be father asked two questions: What would be his son’s way of life? And what would be his mission? This was not for information only. Manoah wanted to know how he could best guide this child for the boy’s calling and mission. Manoah prayed that he would be a father who could prepare his son for what God had in store. That’s quite a prayer, isn’t it? Manoah wanted to know God’s desires and direction for his child.

We pray many things for our unborn children and grandchildren—protection, healthy development, a safe delivery. Let’s add this to our list—God, prepare me to prepare this child for what you want them to be. Prepare me so I can prepare them for your calling and mission. Now that’s a parent’s prayer!

Talking Points

  • God, forgive me for wanting my child to be like me. I pray that they will become like you.
  • Please develop me to be the parent this little life needs so they will grow up and follow your calling and mission.

Lord, please hear and answer my prayer. Help me be your parent for the calling and mission you have placed on this child. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

And … keep praying for your unborn child or grandchild throughout the day.
