Matthew 16:13-16
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus and His disciples left Bethsaida and traveled by land to Caesarea Philippi, healing people in the villages along the way. Caesarea Philippi is located on the southern slope of Mt. Hermon, at the source of the Jordan River. Jesus used this road trip for some important conversations with His followers.
Jesus started His private teaching with a general question: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” The disciples relayed what they had been hearing. Various people in various places were saying that Jesus was John the Baptist, or Elijah, or Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. In response, Jesus got personal. He asked, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Peter spoke first. He said, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
The most important question is not a general discussion about who Jesus is. People in our network of family and friends will have a variety of thoughts on the topic. When it comes to Jesus, the most important question is always personal—“Who do you say I am?” What is your answer to that essential question?
Father, this personal question deserves a personal answer. You desire a personal relationship with us through Jesus. May each of us come to know Your Son intimately. In His name. Amen.
