Our Guide to the End

Have you ever been at the end of your rope? Worn out? Spiritually exhausted? Wondering if the battles are worth it? That’s where David was after eight years of running from Saul. He forgot (or doubted) God’s promises and took matters into his own hands.

 1 Samuel 27:1

Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.”

So, David escaped to the land of the Philistines and, for sixteen months, lived a life of lies and cover-up. God intervened in a dramatic way to grab David’s attention and bring him back home.

When God is out of the picture, we lose direction and focus. Our thoughts and emotions are easily distracted by our circumstances. We need God’s Word to remind us, “For this God is our God forever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.” (Ps 48:14 NIV)

Talking Points

  • Ask God to protect you from moving into the land of the enemy and suffering the consequences. Ask him to protect you from self-counsel.
  • Ask God to help you get connected with other believers who will stand by you with God’s counsel when you are spiritually worn out.

Lord Jesus, guard me against self-counsel. Please help me never lose sight of you. I declare today that you will be my guide to the end. In your name, I pray. Amen.
