After years of planning and two decades of construction, the temple was ready to be devoted to God. Today’s passage includes the opening words of Solomon’s prayer of dedication.

2 Chronicles 6:13-14

Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the court, and he stood on it. Then he knelt on his knees in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven, and said, “O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart….”

Notice Solomon’s posture. The great king, whose wisdom was known throughout the world, humbly dropped to his knees. This was not a time for sitting or standing. Solomon bowed before the God of heaven and earth. And notice his hands. They are not hanging limp at his side or stuffed in his pockets. His hands are lifted toward the Person to whom he is praising.

Posture or the position of our hands during prayer is not a measure of our spirituality. But many times, the posture of our bodies reveals the posture of our hearts. There is something humbling about bowing down. There is something freeing about lifting our hands. During his time of great praise, Solomon chose to do both. Here’s the main question for us: During our times of prayer and praise, what is the posture of our hearts?

Talking Points

  • If you are at a place where you can physically kneel down, do so. Raise your hands to God as a sign of humility and praise.
  • More important than your physical posture is the stance of your heart. Ask God to keep your heart humbled before him.

Lord, may our posture of worship never be all about outward appearance, and may our posture never hold back a heart of humility and praise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
