Deuteronomy 3:22

You shall not fear them, for it is the LORD your God who fights for you.

Nelson Henderson said, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” That is what Moses is doing in this passage. An act of disobedience had disqualified him from leading Israel into the promised land. As a result, he was encouraging the next generation with the truths he had personally experienced. That’s the job of every parent.

Godly parents leave more than resources; they leave a legacy reward. They pass on the truths that they have experienced. They know that God never changes. He will fight for the next generation just like he fought for them. I encourage you to record in a journal or your Bible the truths God has graciously taught you. Tell your children about those truths today. Let them read about them when you are gone.

Talking Points

  • Ask God to give you the selflessness to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit. Ask God to help you encourage the next generation.
  • Ask God to give you opportunities to share his truths with your children. Tell them how God has fought for you. Plan a way to record them for a written legacy.

Father, give me a vision that outlives me. Give me the wisdom to pass confidence in you to my children and grandchildren. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
